Folio 114. Letter from Henry Saunders, Clerk to the Guardians of the Kidderminster Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, regarding additions to workhouse; fever wards. The order dated 5 October 1842 authorised an outlay not exceeding £700. The first estimated cost was £560. The actual cost is £676 19s 2d. He now seeks to know if an additional order needs to be raised by the Commissioners and how the money should be raised. Folios 446-447. Letter from John D Taylor [John Dobede Taylor], Clerk to the Guardians of the Bishops Stortford Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board. He reports that the board of guardians have resolved to offer medical attendance on the sick poor of the union, for one year from 24 June 1852, to the present medical officers at the salaries stated on the enclosed form. Extra charges for midwifery and vaccination will be according to the orders of the Poor Law Board. They also resolved to reduce the medical officers' salaries by 15% next year. The request the Board's sanction for this. Also included is a list of the districts, parishes and medical officers. The medical officers are: Mr John Packman, Puckeridge, Braughing. Mr Renforth Thomas Scarr, junior, Bishops Stortford. Mr Francis Moore, Great Hadham. Mr John Brickwell, Sawbridgeworth. Mr C A Hodson, Bishops Stortford. Mr Samuel Welch, Stansted. Mr S C Hawke, Havering. Mr Henry Brook, Newport. Annotated by Mr Weale [Robert Weale, Poor Law Inspector], that the salaries of the medical officers in this district are much higher than in other places. Letter from R M Hodge [Richard Michell Hodge], Clerk to the Guardians of the Truro Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board, reporting a meeting of the Board, attended by 27 guardians, where, among other matters, they elected medical officers for the coming year. One district had two applicants and each received 12 votes with three abstentions. A question was raised over the right of the chairman to hold a second vote, which would give the abstainers a chance to express an opinion. Consequently the post was re-advertised. Hodge asks, on behalf of the guardians, whether a second vote would have been within the rules. Annotated: [Henry Fleming, Assistant Secretary to the Poor Law Board] refers the matter to [William Golden Lumley, Assistant Secretary to the Poor Law Board] who thinks that a second vote would have been acceptable, as it would give the abstainers a chance to vote. Draft letter from [Lord Courtenay, Secretary to the Poor Law Board], to Mr Lawrence [J Lawrence], Assistant Overseer of Furneux Pelham, Ware, in the Bishops Stortford Poor Law Union, acknowledging his letter of 22 November 1852, replying to Courtenay's letter of 17 November 1852, concerning the performance of his duties in regard to poor rate collection, under the general order for accounts. He tells him that the Board is not satisfied with his letter, as it does not explain why he failed to keep the required books and records. However, they note that he is now keeping them and they hope there will be no more irregularities. Courtenay encloses a copy of the order [not included] and repeats the warning in the Board's letter of 28 July 1852, of the necessity of strict compliance with the regulations.
