The letter acknowledges receipt of a letter of the 19 March 1851 on the subject of proposed subscription by the Select Vestry to the Southern and Toxteth Hospital of £50 per annum. The Board have given the fullest consideration to your letter and have also called upon the Select Vestry for information as to the prospective advantages the parish will derive from subscribing to the Hospital. Folio 698. Letter from William Ashton, Clerk to the Guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission headed 'Allowance of Beer to Paupers'. On 1 September 1842 the guardians responded to a petition from workhouse inmates for beer on Sunday with the bread and cheese granting men ¾ and women ½ a pint. At 6d per gallon the sum is trifling and there has been no act of insubordination so sanction for continuation is requested. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission to Mr Morley, Surgeon of Basford, Nottingham, with reference to his letter of 2 September, they have made enquiries of the board of governors of the Basford Poor Law Union regarding the proposed discontinuation of his services as vaccinator for the Basford District and have learned that the guardians consider it in-commercial to have two medical gentlemen attending the union workhouse. Presuming that the contract contains the usual stipulations that either side may terminate the agreement on twenty eight days the Commission sees no grounds to interfere with the decision of the board.
