Folios 581-582. Letter from Thomas Webster, Assistant Overseer, Braughing, in the Bishops Stortford Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board. He expresses surprise at the statement by Mr Adey [Daniel Goodson Adey], District Auditor [for Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire], concerning the collection of poor rates, contained in their letter [dated 28 October 1852]. Webster states that he has kept the books since August 1852 and makes regular reports to the board of guardians. He took all his books to the audit, but Adey did not look at them. Folios 213-214. Letter from William Ashton, Clerk to the Guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, in response to their letter of 26 February 1841 (1766/B1841) enclosing a copy of the Nottingham Journal's article on the supposed resolutions of the guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union. He particularly draws their attention to the thirteenth resolution. The cutting from the Nottingham Journal shows a list of resolutions supposedly those of the guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union. They imply that the guardians are indignant that the report of the inquest into John Parkes' death appears to implicate them. They disapprove of the treatment he received on arrival at the workhouse, the medical officer ordering that he be given 'a little something warm' on the premise that he was unable to give him wine, or any other stimulant, without prior sanction of the guardians. The governor of the workhouse had a stock of ale and wine, provided by the guardians for the use of sick inmates, and, had the medical officer asked that Parkes be given some, the governor should have complied with his request. Nixon is reported to have commented that the restrictive order was entered in the guardian's minute book. Colonel Rolleston is reported as saying that Mr Senior, [Edward Senior, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner], disapproved of the order. All these statements are false as no such order exists. Mr Morley's [William Morley, Medical Officer] assertion that he had asked the board, on several occasions, to rescind the order was untrue. He had ordered extra meat, wine and ale for inmates in the past, the board intervening in only three instances. The board had supposedly asked that the resolutions be published in the Nottingham and London newspapers and that fifty copies be sent to unions throughout the midlands, to the Poor Law Commission and the Secretary of State. They also asked that a public subscription be raised to pay the expenses of the witnesses in the forthcoming trial of Davison [Sandford Tatham Davison, Surgeon] and Gill [William Gill, Overseer]. The thirteenth resolution, to which Ashton had drawn the Poor Law Commission's attention, asked that an assistant commissioner, other than Senior, be sent to investigate the charges against the board. Letter from Harry White, Clerk to the Guardians of the Blything Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission with two enclosures: Copy of the minutes of a meeting of the board of guardians held on 19 December 1836 at which Mr Davy, Guardian for Yoxford, drew the attention of the Board, to the Ipswich Journal of 17 December 1836, in which it was reported that Mr C Cobbold at a meeting held on 14 December 1836 in Ipswich, in order to consider the working of the new Poor Law Amendment Act refered to the case of a pauper named Spacham living in Ipswich St Clements but belonging to Walpole in the Blything Poor Law Union. Mr Davy feels the incorrect statement should be publicly contradicted and the meeting of guardians decided to ask the clerk, to write to the Poor Law Commission to express anxiety and to ask for permission to write to the editor of both papers, to say that the statement was being investigated and a correct statement from the guardians would be made public in the papers; The Ipswich Journal in which the case is reported [not included].
