MH 12/13904/239 Folios 335-350. Letter from Thomas Day, Clerk to the Guardians of the Bromsgrove...
Folios 335-350. Letter from Thomas Day, Clerk to the Guardians of the Bromsgrove Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, headed 'Division of Tardebigg [Tardebigge]. Further to his letter of 16 June the guardians of Bentley Pauncefoot have taken no notice. They have treated the remaining parts of the parish as if no separation had taken place by debiting them with the establishment charges. Ratepayers of Redditch and Webheath complained and asked the overseers to withhold monies. There are now considerable arrears. Advice is sought as to how they might proceed. It is felt that they should pay in the same proportion as it did to the general rate. Reverend J Clayton [John Clayton], one of the guardians, has provided a statement showing the amounts contributed by several divisions of the parish to be of use in the calculations. Redditch and Webheath have the same difficulty with the county rate. Can they legally enforce payment of any sum they may choose to order the overseers of Bentley Pauncefoot to meet the township's share of the expenses from the time of separation? The majority population of Redditch is employed in needle making and that of Bently Pauncefoot is agricultural. He adds a postscript asking for the return of the accompanying papers numbered 1 -6 and asks if the board should relieve the poor of Bentley Pouncefoot. Hand written table for the year ending Lady Day 1840 showing the contributions of Bentley Pauncefoot, Webheath, Redditch upper and Redditch lower. Annotated: inform of the intention to issue an order adapted to the circumstances of Bentley Tardebigg. Attached to this package of documents are the working papers for the production of the order referred to above. They comprise: 1. Printed order to address the present difficulties annotated further [many annotations illegible or torn and annotations themselves annotated]. The three guardians were elected for Tardebigg are without distinction of townships and the order outlines the change to be made following the separation of Bentley Pauncefoot. It also addresses the issue of monies due the proportion for Bentley Pauncefoot being assessed as £203. 2. Printed order for the election of guardians for the townships of Bentley Pauncefoot, Redditch and Webheath heavily annotated. It seeks to rescind the previous order and arrange for further election of guardians to reflect the separation of Bentley Pauncefoot. 3. Printed schedule of election of guardians annotated to reflect the circumstances as above. 4. Extensive notes initialled G L (and counter signed by Sir Edmund Head) with his reflections on how best to achieve a resolution by rescinding previous orders and issuing new ones and giving a detailed commentary about the precise phrasing needed. 4. Note written by Sir Edmund Head providing the basis for the calculation of the sums due from Bentley Pauncefoot. Annotated: amended declaration dated 22 and sent 24 September 1840 - 13 copies and Election order dated 23 and sent 24 September 1840 - 13 copies. Paper Number: 9451/B/1840.
