Letter from John D Taylor [John Dobede Taylor], Clerk to the Guardians of the Bishops Stortford Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board enclosing an application for a fresh valuation for the parish of Birchanger [Essex]. The valuation was made some years ago and the present ratepayers are dissatisfied and request a new valuation. The guardians assent to the request. A new map is not required. Enclosed is an application from the churchwardens and overseers of the parish of Birchanger requesting a new valuation in order to levy the rates for the relief of the poor under the terms of the Parochial Assessment Act. Is it intended that women should have 1lb of cooked potato and men should have 1/2lb on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday each week or only on Sunday? The dietary table as altered by the guardians is returned for them to make a satisfactory reply and the Commission will make an order to be prepared and forwarded to them without delay. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission, to Thomas Day, Clerk to the Guardians of the Bromsgrove Poor Law Union, stating that to be a ratepayer a person must have been rated for a whole year and paid all rates due. The excusal of any rates during the year will destroy his right to vote at the election of guardians. If payment of the rate is made despite the excusal, the party will be fully entitled to vote. Any rates being made before the year in question and excused not being due would not affect the present right to vote as a ratepayer.
