MH 12/13904/302 Folios 439-441. Letter from Thomas Day, Clerk to the Guardians of the Bromsgrove...
Folios 439-441. Letter from Thomas Day, Clerk to the Guardians of the Bromsgrove Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, headed 'Extension of Vaccination'. In response to the circular of 23 November a committee has been set up to extend the practice of vaccination. The union is to be divided into three as per the current medical districts and vaccination contracted with preference being given to the current Medical Officers. The stations for attendance should be as follows: 1. For Bromsgrove District comprising all the parishes of Bromsgrove and Stoke Prior: the residence of the contractor at Bournheath and Catshill for Bromsgrove and at Stoke Works for Stoke Prior. 2. For Tardebigg [Tardebigge] District comprising Tardebigg (including Redditch, Webheath and Bentley Pauncefoot), Tutnall Cobley, Alvechurch and Cofton Hackett: the residence of the contractor Redditch, the house of S Perkins at Fox Lydiate, the house of Mr Hand Old Wharf Tutnall, the house of Mr Rabone Alvechurch, the School House Cofton Hackett. 3. For the Bellbroughton [Belbroughton] and Hagley District comprising Belbroughton, Hagley, Pedmore, Clent, Frankley, Hunnington and Romsley: the residence of the contractor at Belbroughton, the house of Mrs Mansell Hagley, the School House Pedmore, the house of the Relieving House Clent, the house of Mr Potter. The contractors are to attend these stations every [blank] from Apr through to October so long as new cases be brought and to vaccinate whenever someone applies to their residence. Remuneration is 1s 6d for each vaccination at the residence or a station less than 2 miles distant, 2s for stations beyond 2 miles and within 4 miles and 2s 6d for stations beyond 4 miles. The committee note that the present Medical Officers whose contracts expire in March are contracted to vaccinate all cases for which they receive an order. As this is not a favourable time for vaccination they are minded not to order further action under the late Act. A motion to this effect was proposed by Lord Lyttleton and seconded by the Reverend J Turner [John Turner]. Printed form with details as above entered and annotated: issue. They agree that the period to March is less favourable but feel that an interval of 6 months without the opportunities is too long to be safely adopted. They recommend one attendance at each station in early December and in early March. Paper Number: 1159/V/1840. Poor Law Union Number 526. Counties: Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire.
