Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission, to J and W Rees Mogg [John Rees Mogg and William Rees Mogg], Clerks to the Guardians of the Clutton Poor Law Union, referring to proceeds of sale of the Farrington parish houses. Points out necessity to enquire of parish officers if there are any claims as envisaged in Acts 1& 2 Vic 25, 'fair and just though not strictly legal' as these can only be paid from sale funds. Should none exist then money will be directed as requested. However it should be invested with the guardians having the power to draw down capital to meet annual instalments in respect of cost of a new workhouse. Paper Number: 4932/C/1839. The overseers of Sutton informed the Board of their dissatisfaction with the manner in which he carried out his duties. As a result, Thomas Pearson has resigned and the guardians request the approval of the Board. Annotated: Thomas Pearson appointment notified in December 1851 as Collector and Assistant Overseer of Sutton and Steeton of at a salary of £22 13s 4d. Paper Number: 952/1855. Folios 171-172. Letter from J and W Rees Mogg [John Rees Mogg and William Rees Mogg], Clerks to the Guardians of the Clutton Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, regarding the Compton Martin survey. On 21 August 1838 the Commissioners authorised a survey plan and valuation on the scale of three chains to the inch. Before issue of this order a plan had been made of several hundred acres at the scale of four chains to the inch. The surveyor then employed is willing to survey the whole parish at a much lower charge than any other, having surveyed so much already at the 4 chain scale. The guardians wish to be informed if there is any objection to substituting four chains scale for three chains. Annotations: ask Captain Dawson's opinion, 20 August 1839. Paper Number: 5796/B/1839. Letter from George Spencer, Clerk to the Guardians of the Keighley Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board, saying that he is directed by the guardians to inform the them that Joseph Waterhouse, Assistant Master of the Keighley workhouse, has recently got married and that his mother, the matron, is not able to manage the workhouse on her own. The guardians have therefore asked them both to resign their posts on the 26 March and they have agreed to do so. The guardians have therefore advertised for anther master and matron.
