Folio 273. Draft letter from Poor Law Commission to Samuel King, Clerk to the Guardians of Mitford and Launditch Poor Law Union, headed [Particular] Papers relating to proposed Sale. The Commissioners acknowledge the several letters of 11 December, 16 December and 20 February and regret to state that they have been and are still precluded from proceeding with the proposed sale of East Dereham Workhouse in consequence of the Sale Requests No's 1 and 2 such were transmitted to this office having been mislaid. Folio 273. Letter from William Ashton, [Clerk to the Guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union], to E Chadwick [Edwin Chadwick, Secretary to the Poor Law Commission]. He acknowledges receipt of their letter of 19 May 1837 asking for information about the salaries of medical officers, according to a form said to have been sent on 29 March 1837. Ashton has not received the form, and requests one to be sent. He says Mr Gulson [Edward Gulson, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner] is in attendance, and says he has been asked to apply for a bond, 'for the due performance of the duties of Joseph Sanders', who has been appointed as Collector and Assistant Overseer for the parish of Basford. He states that the case against Edward Sutcliffe, late Relieving Officer in the Keighley Poor Law Union was heard before the magistrates who issued a distress warrant to be levied upon Sutcliffe's goods and for him to be imprisoned in the Wakefield House of Correction for three months. Folios 248-251. Letter from Harry White, Clerk to the Guardians of the Blything Poor Law Union, enclosing lists of people recommended by the Board to be sent to manufacturing districts. Certificates of character not yet obtained will be forwarded as soon as they are. The board wishes to hear from the Commission about: The amount of wages. The time for which they will be engaged. The name and residence. The accommodation provided for their reception and residence. The mode of conveyance and its expense. The name of the Commission's agent in the respective districts responsible for locating the families and for the fulfilment of the contract on the part of the employer. The board also wishes the Commission to state that the migration lists contain an account of the families chargeable to the respective parishes who may wish to migrate but not before they can receive this information. In answer to the Commission's offer to apprentice 25 female children, he forwards a list of 20 female children resident in the workhouse who are of an age to be apprenticed, and the Board will send a further list of five children as soon as they can. He also asks if the Commission can recommend any improvement in the heating of the workhouse in order to cut the cost of coal. Migration Lists. Letter from Poor Law Commission to Mark Milnes, Assistant Overseer, Basford acknowledging his letter and enclosed order from Christopher Swain, a Coroner for Nottinghamshire regarding payment to William Watts, [Surgeon of Nottingham] as medical witness at inquest on William Renshaw. The overseers cannot refuse to pay the fee to the medical witness, the payment of which has been ordered by the Coroner. By the Act of last Sessions, 6& 7 William 4 c 89 the Coroner is empowered to order the payment enumeration to a Medical [Practitioner] for his attendance at an Inquest out of the Poor Rate, according to a table of fees prescribed by the Act. The board calls the guardians' attention to entries made in the visitors' books relative to the cases of certain lunatic pauper inmates and requests their observations.
