The board recommends that the families who have refused the offer of employment, and any similar cases that may occur, should only receive relief within the workhouse. They thank him for his observations on the rise in criminal activity, but inform him that they require a lengthy investigation before a definite answer can be given. The Poor Law Commission support, in principle, the proposal to initiate regular communication and meetings with the board of guardians of other Unions, but point out that several similar meetings have taken place without success. He informs them that at an extraordinary meeting of the Basford guardians held on 16 June 1837, Mr Wright Allen was appointed as medical officer to the 5th district of the Basford Poor Law Union at a salary of £50 per annum, and Mr William Billings of Sneinton near Nottingham was appointed to the 6th district at a salary of £30 per annum. Annotated: To be approved and confirmed. Also the clerk has not reported the new contract for the workhouse at an advance of £7, but the total advance for all the medical districts is so small (less than £15) that it will be best to accede and sanction. They have no objection to the clause they added for defraying the expenses of the children back to the parishes if they put an end to the agreement before the expiration of the term. They ask when they may expect the children and want the assurance of the guardians or other respectable person that the children are of 'healthy and moral character', and that they are not sent away for 'improper conduct'. Letter from Edward Gulson, [Assistant Poor Law Commissioner], Newark, to George Nicholls, [Commissioner], regarding the following: Revision of the pauper lists of the Basford Poor Law Union, with many Guardians present, but Mr Nixon [Thomas Nixon, Chairman of the Basford Board of Guardians] absent. Agreement that the pleasure ground - the market garden of 18 acres and the fine drawing-room in the house are to be done away with. The approaching election of Guardians and mitigating any possible strife in Nottingham. The Mayor compares the course taken with that taken in Leicester [Leicestershire] where each political party had sent agents to Nottingham canvassing and collecting proxy votes as if voting for an MP [Member of Parliament]. The Municipal Reform Bill and Borough magistrates being ex-officio Guardians. He is off to Boston [Lincolnshire], to meet parish officers then to the opening of the Mansfield Poor Law Union. He asks for a copy of the letter on assistant overseers to be sent to the board of guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union by Monday's post, and another copy of it to the Mr Riley [John Riley, Auditor of the Basford Poor Law Union]. He says they 'must make the best of a bad business', because a parish has doubled the salary of an assistant overseer, but on the understanding, indeed on condition, that various illegal charges are to be paid by him and thus covered in his salary.
