Folio 74. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission to Thomas Watkins, Clerk to the Guardians of the Cardiff Poor Law Union, acknowledging receipt of his letter of 17 February 1843, and state that the cost of valuing a property for assessment to the poor rate can only be paid from that fund when an order has been issued by the Commission for a new valuation of the entire parish under the provision of the Parochial Assessment Act. If, due to defects in the existing assessment of the parish of St John the Baptist, Cardiff, it is thought advisable to have a new valuation, the Commission will issue an order for the valuation on receipt of the enclosed [not included] form of representation, and will direct the guardians to appoint a valuer. He forwards a list of elected guardians for the current year. There were no nominations for Ribbesford and Broome and an imperfect nomination for Rushock. He states that there were no elected guardians for Broome and Rushock last year and asks can the old guardians continue to act. Ribbesford had an elected guardian last year; he presumes he can continue to act. The guardian for Stone was appointed overseer by the magistrates; can he continue to act as guardian?
