Letter from W and E Willoby [William Willoby and Edward Willoby], Clerks to the Guardians of the Berwick-upon-Tweed Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board regarding the appointment of John Mannners as medical officer of the Tweedmouth District, and Alexander Kirkwood's objection to this. The guardians claim that Alexander Kirkwood is under the misapprehension that the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, where he resides, is part of the district for which the medical officer is appointed. Folios 349-350. Letter from Charles Bond, Clerk to the Guardians of the Axminster Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission replying to a letter from Mr Chadwick of 26 June 1846 regarding the letting of parish property. Bond had communicated with Mr Mansfield, Overseer of Lyme Regis, and found that there was no lease of the premises to Mr Osborne. An extract from the parish minute book showed that there was a public auction in 1839 for the term of 7, 14 or 21 years at the option of the taker. Osborne made the highest offer at £19 10 shillings per year, the overseers to pay the land tax and insurance. This was witnessed by Mr Poole, churchwarden and W Dunster, overseer, on 24 February 1839 and signed by S Osborne Senior, Surveyor and Sons, [Mr Follett Osborne] and James Osborne. Several parishioners were present and it was agreed not to go to the expense of a lease. Annotated: Mr Lumley [William Golden Lumley, Assistant Secretary to the Poor Law Commission]. Folio 735. Letter from Bernard Green, Relieving Officer, to the Poor Law Board, in reply to their letter of 9 June, 21027/1855. He states that Robert Bradley, his wife and 7 children were relieved by a discretionary order from the Settle Poor Law Union. He was ordered to give them relief although Bradley's means were uncertain. Edward Walton his wife and 8 children were given relief when Walton was out of employment.
