Folios 364-366. Letter from Thomas Watkins, Clerk to the Guardians of the Cardiff Poor Law Union, to Poor Law Board, forwarding the 'Forms of Queries' relating to the appointment of Mr Thomas Evans as Collector for Lantrissent [Llantrisant]. The form shows Evans as living at Lantrissent and was previously a Malster. The salary is to be £100 per annum. William Treherne, Lantrissent, and Daniel Jones, Lantwit Vardre, are sureties. Folio 45. Letter from Thomas Day, Clerk to the Guardians of the Bromsgrove Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, asking for advice on behalf of the overseers of Bromsgrove parish. If a voting paper is left at a voter's house, often a person calls and asks if he may fill it up. On agreeing it may later appear that the preferred candidate has not been chosen. If the voting paper is filled up in the absence of the voter have overseers the right to reject the vote? Or if a voter cannot write should the initials of the voter and the witness be placed opposite the chosen candidate and if this has not happened can the overseers reject the vote? Also what is procedure in case of proxy vote? Have the overseers any discretion in these matters? Annotations: papers can be rejected if overseers are informed of irregularities or if initials of voters or proxies are not countersigned by witnesses. Paper Number: 2410/C/1839. Letter from Edward Senior, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner, to the Poor Law Commission informing them that no resolution concerning extra diet for the inmates of the workhouse had been entered in the minute book of the guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union. They thought that the medical officer could not order stimulants for sick paupers, without prior sanction from the guardians because of a misunderstanding over a directive from [John Riley], Auditor. Folio 371. Letter from Thomas Watkins junior for Thomas Watkins, Clerk to the Guardians of the Cardiff Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission. He refers to the case of two boys, Thomas Harris and Edmund Williams, who were admitted to the workhouse and claimed they had absconded from Chepstow Poor Law Union Union workhouse [Monmouthshire]. The Cardiff workhouse matron [Mrs Davies] immediately wrote to the master of Chepstow workhouse stating what had happened and asking for the boys to be sent for. She received a reply from the clerk of the union and Watkins encloses a copy [not included]. He has been asked by the guardians to write a reply and asks the Commission what they should do to return the boys to Chepstow.
