Folio 624. Letter from George Spencer, Clerk to the Guardians of the Keighley Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board, after receipt of a letter on 26 February 1855 referring to a letter sent by the Board on 23 May 1855 which he had omitted to answer. The letter asked if the board of guardians would agree to the payment of a salary of £20 per annum to John Sawley, Keighley Workhouse Master and £11 per annum to his wife, the Matron. An entry in the minute book of the union on 24 May 1854 agreed to the proposal and the Clerk now requests approval by the Board. Annotated: sanction, 28 February 1855. Paper Number: 6781/1855. Letter from George Spencer, Clerk to the Guardians of the Keighley Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board, advising them that the guardians have received and approved the formal resignation of Thomas Pearson and intend to appoint a successor soon. John Brigg wishes to resign from his present position as a Guardian in order to apply for the vacancy. The guardians request approval for these moves. The guardians do not think it necessary to appoint a new guardian immediately as it is almost the end of the parochial year. The former was 1,723 and the latter 1,835. The board wish to be informed of the reason for this. The increase appears to be principally in the classes recorded under columns 5 and 6. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission to Charles Bond, Clerk to the Guardians of the Axminster Poor Law Union, regarding the letting of parish property, namely the premises formerly used as the poor house in Lyme Regis. They state that letting the property to Mr Osborne without creating a lease is irregular and illegal. 5& 6 Wm 4 c69 s83 imposed on the guardians of the union and not the overseers the duty of letting as well as sale of parish property and they should take steps to execute a proper lease in this case. Folios 321-323. Letter from George Spencer, Clerk to the Guardians of the Keighley Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board, responding to request to forward particulars of the appointment of Mr Bernard Green junior to the office of Relieving Officer. He encloses for approval the appointment form for Green. The form shows Green, of Keighley, had been an Assistant Relieving Officer and an Assistant Overseer, Keighley. The salary to be £105 per annum, on a temporary basis. He is responsible for Keighley district (Keighley, Sutton, Steeton and Haworth). The post became vacant because of the death of the relieving officer, Bernard Green, the elder. Annotated: the Board have no objections to the appointment, but given that it is temporary, the Board would like to know what further arrangements the guardians have made. Paper Number: 7329/1854.
