Folios 315-316. A sworn deposition by Eliza Perham regarding a complaint of neglect of duty by the Rev Stephen A Cooke against Mr C Hayman. This witness resided in the same house as Jane Walden. She states that she was below stairs when Mr Philip Hayman called on April 8 to visit Jane Walden, prior to that he had called four or five times. She says that William Walden had been ill for more than a fortnight, but it was not until that day that he had taken to his bed upstairs in the house. He complained of head pain and of feeling ill all over. Mr Hayman examined him during his visit on April 8 and afterwards she went to Chardstock to collect two powders ordered by Mr Hayman. William Walden had previously complained of feeling nauseous but he had not actually vomited. However, after taking one of the powders he was very sick. She says that Mr Hayman and William Warden had a conversation, but she did not know hear what they said. She states that no one was available to send for Mr P Hayman and he did not visit again until the following Monday 13 April. On the Wednesday there were four people lying ill in bed in the house and that made it very difficult for her to send for medicine, or medical assistance. Mr P Hayman knew of that problem, because she told him. On Sunday 12 April Robert Povey, who had come to the house on Friday at her request, went to fetch Mr Jolliffe. On that day Jane Walden got up for the first time but she did not come down stairs until Monday 13 April, the day that Mr Wills and Mr P Hayman visited William Walden and the day on which he died. She states that she could not get neighbours to assist them because they had children who were ill. She did not ask the neighbours to go for Mr Hayman as she knew they would not do so because they were afraid of the fever and would not come near our house. Jane Walden and her children were suffering from fever and they appeared to be very ill, but not as bad as William Walden. She had thought that Mr Hayman, because he had seen how ill William Walden was, would have visited on Friday 10 April. The condition of William Walden deteriorated on the night of Wednesday 15 April and continued to do so and he raved on the Friday and Saturday. Poor Law Union Number 76. Counties: Devon and Dorset.

Folios 13-15. A letter from Mr T B Browne. Inspector of Schools, Pontefract, to Mr A Austin [Alfred Austin, Poor Law Inspector], complaining that the consolidated article order 114 has been disregarded at the Bingley Workhouse in the case of two boys living there. When he visited the workhouse in 1850 he was informed that two boys were working every day in a local factory instead of going to school. Their wages were taken and applied in aid of the rates. This was in violation of the order of the Poor Law Board and he had hoped that the boys would be sent back to school. When he visited on 10 February 1851 he found that the boys, both still under the age of 15, were still working. They were earning five shillings each and this was a larger sum than the cost of their clothing and maintenance. The guardians of the workhouse therefore made a profit and were violating the law. The elder of the two boys could neither read, write nor repeat the lord's prayer correctly and both were ignorant. He hopes that some measures will be taken to educate the two boys. Folio 374. Draft letter from the Poor Law Board to John Milligan, Medical Officer, [Keighley Poor Law Union], acknowledging receipt of his letter of 24 May. The committees of the House of Commons sat in 1837 and 1838 to enquire generally into the administration of relief to the poor. They occasionally presented their evidence in 22 reports in the first year and 49 reports in the second. The general reports of the committees and the indexes of the reports and evidence are supplementary papers 481, 1 and 2 of the 1837 session and supplementary papers 681, 1 and 2 of the 1838 session. Folios 328-329. A letter from Charles Bond to the Poor Law Commission regarding the number of wives and families of transported convicts, currently resident in the Axminster Poor Law Union. Included with the letter is a table containing details of three families. Listed are the names of three women, Charlotte Gudge, Mary Pyke and Sarah Wood. Also listed are the names of two husbands Samuel Pyke and James Wood, also the number and ages of the children in each family, as shown below. Charlotte Gudge has three children, a son under 7 years of age and a son and daughter between 7 and 14 years. There are six children in the Pyke family two are boys under 7 years of age and the remaining four consist of one boy and three girls, between the ages of 7 and 13 years. In the Wood family there are four children, two boys and one girl, all aged between 7 and 13 years of age. Folios 272-275. Draft letter from Poor Law Commission to Charles Bond, Clerk to the Guardians of the Axminster Poor Law Union. Commission report regarding complaint by Mr Jolliffe, Medical Officer respecting a vote of censure for alleged neglect of duty in the case of Ann Clarke. The Board express the opinion the Jolliffe was guilty of gross neglect in not giving his immediate personal attendance to this case. The Board summarise that Jolliffe attended Ann Clarke as a pauper and the Relieving Officer refused to give an Order upon the Medical Officer as he had already attended. Jolliffe was not aware full extent of Ann Clarke's illness when first applied to and would not have delayed his visit if he had been made aware. Ann Clarke did not die because of this first attack. The Board state Jolliffe was not guilty of breach of duty in this case because he was not made aware of the seriousness of the illness and would have attended directly if urgency had been stated. The Commissioners remark on Relieving Officer's conduct in this case and reasons as to why no written order had been issued. The Commissioners draw attention of the board of guardians to Articles 16-19 entitling the permanently poor to tickets for the attendance of the Medical Officer and request 'steps may be taken to carry the same into effect. Letter from Charles Bond, Clerk to the Guardians of the Axminster Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, regarding an item disallowed in the audit of the parochial accounts on 28 May 1845 by Mr Tucker. This was for printing costs and an explanation given as to the late payment. A Vestry meeting was held and a resolution passed to set the particulars before the commissioners and ask consent to pay the overseer of Chardstock the amount out of the poor rates.
