Folios 111-112. Letter from William Graham, of 51 Marylebone, Liverpool to the Poor Law Board. He refers to letter by same post from [John Callan], Medical Officer of number 5 District, Liverpool Parish, in which he explains his employment of Mr Campion as a vaccinator. Graham became Callan's assistant on the 18 February 1851 but it is not true that Campion's services were only retained until then. Campion continued to vaccinate in the number 5 District until about 10 days ago when he stopped because Callan reduced his pay from 9d to 6d for each case. Campion is now busy vaccinating for H Emmett, J B Hyam and Thomas Barford Gildersleeve, of this parish. Folios 33-34. Letter from Dr Kay [James Phillips Kay, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner], Norwich, [Norfolk], to the Poor Law Commission, informing them that the board of guardians of the Blything Poor Law Union had appointed a committee on Monday 16 January 1837, to assist him in reviewing the insufficient diet of the able bodied men who worked eight hours per day, at the 'Hand Corn Mill'. He has taken evidence from the superintendant of labour and the surgeon at the workhouse and will forward the evidence as soon as it is copied. The committee reported that they could not find any evidence to confirm that the men working at the mill were receiving an insufficient diet and request that the application regarding diet, from the board of guardians, be disregarded. Folio 360. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission to [J Bruce Campbell] of Nottingham, acknowledging receipt of Campbell's letter of the 24 April. The Commission say they will make enquiries into the case of John Henson of Heanor to which he has drawn their attention. They also point out that the governors of the Basford Poor Law Union in which Henson appears to reside are responsible for his relief and not, as Campbell seems to think, the governors of the Derby Poor Law Union. Also: draft letter from the Poor Law Commission to Mr William Ashton, Clerk to the Guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union, forwarding a letter which they received from [Mr J Bruce Campbell] regarding the case of John Henson of Heanor. The Commission point out that although Henson might belong to the parish of the Derby Poor Law Union, the governor's of the Basford Poor Law Union are still primarily responsible for his relief as he resides in that union. Referring to Watkins' letter of 6 February and stating that no letter dated 4 July 1850 had been received referring to the appointment of a collector of poor rates for the parish of Llandaff. The Board explains that the order of the 12 November 1838 enables the union to appoint another collector to replace John Pride, dismissed, and, when made, it should be reported to the Board. Draft Letter from the Poor Law Board to Thomas Watkins, Clerk to the Guardians of the Cardiff Poor Law Union, acknowledging their letter of the 16 December 1853 relating to the pauper Samuel Morgan and his wife and six children. Stating that at the time of his death were in law residing in the parish of Lantrissent. Their house was in that parish and the family resided in it. Folios 294-295. Letter from Thomas Watkins, Clerk to the Guardians of the Cardiff Poor Law Union, to Poor Law Board. Referring to their letter of the 19 March 1852 and forwarding the enclosed certificate. Stating that the house of refuge is managed by a man who receives 15s per week and a nurse who receives 5s weekly it was opened during the prevalence of cholera and having found very useful for reception of infectious cases has been continued ever since. Postscript - the provisions are cooked in the workhouse and supplied thence. Enclosed: Workhouse Accommodation Form A. This certificate relates to the maximum capacity of the work house, it states: The board of guardians of the Cardiff Union after consulting with their medical officer report to the Poor Law Board that the above named workhouse and house of refuge are capable of accommodating respectively 260 and 30 persons.
