Draft letter from the Poor Law Board to R M Hodge [Richard Michell Hodge], Clerk to the Guardians of the Truro Poor Law Union, referring to the resolutions passed by the guardians on 16 February 1848 relative to the state of the three union workhouses. The board wishes to have a copy of the letter from the St Clement Workhouse Medical Officer mentioned in the resolutions. As the resolutions contain no reference to the propriety of building a new workhouse, the board again urges the guardians to consider this necessity, as the existing workhouses are inadequate for the requirements of so important a union as Truro. Folios 821-823. Letter from George Spencer, Clerk to the Guardians of the Keighley Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board. In reply to their letter of 27 November he encloses for approval the appointment form for William Ramsbottom as Relieving Officer. The form shows Ramsbottom, of Lees, near Bingley, had been a schoolmaster. The salary to be £70 per annum. His sureties are William Turner, Haworth, and Thomas Normington, Lees. He is responsible for the Bingley District, comprising of Bingley and Morton. The post became vacant after the resignation of Edward Sutcliffe, caused by the 'embarrassed state of his accounts and affairs'. With regard to the Bingley district, to which Mr Ferrand's letter principally relates, he should be informed that a complete inspection has been done (referring him to paragraph 4 of Mr Farrall's report of 24 October, marked by crosses).
